Freedom Defined
Reading:
John 8:31-36 - To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”

Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

Devotional: Jesus promised that holding to His teaching would make us truly His disciples, and that knowing the truth would set us free. But what does freedom really mean? Our culture defines freedom as the ability to do whatever we want, but Jesus offers something deeper. True freedom isn't the absence of restraint; it's liberation from the things that hold us captive—shame, guilt, addiction, fear, and sin itself. When we cannot stop scrolling, control our anger, or forgive those who hurt us, we are not free. Jesus offers covenant relationship, not a checklist of rules. His teaching reveals truth that breaks the chains we cannot break ourselves. Today, ask yourself honestly: Am I truly free, or am I bound by something I need Jesus to address?
