Bolstering Up in the Middle of Trouble
Reading:
John 16:29-33 - Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech. Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God.”

“Do you now believe?” Jesus replied. “A time is coming and in fact has come when you will be scattered, each to your own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Devotional: Jesus did not promise his followers a life free of trouble. He promised something far more durable -- his own overcoming. The instruction to "take heart" is not a suggestion to minimize pain or manufacture optimism. The phrase carries the weight of an inward strengthening, a deliberate recalibration of who you are and who you follow when everything around you is pressing in. Joseph modeled this throughout thirteen chapters of difficulty. He did not wait until the trouble passed to decide who he was. He decided in the middle of it. The question for you today is not whether trouble will come. It is who you will be when it does.

Personal Reflection: In your most recent season of difficulty, did you bolster inward or did you allow the trouble to define your response? What would it look like to do it differently?
