Seized With Remorse
Reading:
Matthew 27:1-5 - When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders. “I have sinned,” he said, “for I have betrayed innocent blood.”

“What is that to us?” they replied. “That’s your responsibility.”

So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.

Devotional: Judas watched the consequence of his choice unfold in real time. The text says he was seized with remorse, a word that carries the weight of something grabbing you from the inside and refusing to let go. Regret does that. It waits until the outcome is visible and then it takes hold. But notice what Judas did first. He went back. He confessed. He said plainly that innocent blood was on his hands. The tragedy is not that he felt remorse. The tragedy is where he took that remorse. Regret acknowledged is the beginning of something. Regret buried is the beginning of something far worse.

Reflection: Is there something you have been unwilling to name out loud, to God or to another person, because naming it makes it real?
